RAFA HAILS RETURNING MASCHERANO

Rafael Benitez has admitted the return of Javier Macherano to his squad for this weekend's clash at Aston Villa is a timely boost with skipper Steven Gerrard consigned to a spell on the sidelines.
The Reds number 20, who helped Argentina claim the gold medal in Beijing, might have missed out in the UEFA shortlist for best midfielder in the Champions League last season, but Benitez said the player's qualities are not lost on anyone at Anfield.

"Our supporters know he is a fantastic player," said Benitez. "He gives us the balance you need when we are attacking and he always does a good job.

"It's really important to have him back and also Lucas Leiva and Ryan Babel. We have three players and maybe they will need a little bit of time to get sharp, but they have confidence and more experience. Mascherano was a key player for us last season and he can be the same this year."

The Reds boss also revealed his captain Steven Gerrard faces a race against time to be fit for the Anfield clash with Manchester United on September 13.

"Everyone knows Steven is a key player for us but he needed to have the operation," added Benitez. "It's not serious but he will be out for about 15 days.

"He will be close for the United game but I cannot guarantee he will be available. He will be working really hard with the doctor and the physios and we will have to wait and see."
